Luweero Muslim District Council Is a representation of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council as the governing and central administrative body handling Muslim affairs in Uganda and Luwero Muslim District is Headed by a District Kadhi as its Head and Leader. The current District Kadhi is SHEIKH MULINDWA RAMADHAN NSANJA Who graduated from AZHAR UNIVERSITY faculty of Islamic Sharia Law, Certificate in IFTAA from Egyptian Dar Iftaa and holds Diploma’s In Computer Studies, Soft Skills and English Language.
Luwero was the site of a fierce insurgency by the rebel group National Resistance Army and a brutal counter-insurgency by the government of Milton Obote, known as the Luweero War or the “Bush War”, that left many thousands of civilians dead during the early to mid-1980s. The area affected by the war has come to be known as the Luweero Triangle.
In 2012 Uganda Muslim Supreme Council under the steady wise leadership of His Eminence the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje granted Nakasongola to became a Muslim District being split from Luwero to ease and extend services to the people.
In 2018 Nakaseke Muslim Districts was also split from Luwero Muslim District both Nakasongola and Nakaseke were Counties of Luwero Muslim District.
Luweero Muslim District is The Umbrella for All Muslims of Luwero and it’s headquarters at Luweero , Kasana Mosque after Luwero Hospital. There are 10 Muslim Counties within the district, each with its own Leadership headed by the County Sheikh, The 10 Muslim Counties of Luwero include: Bombo, Bamunanika, Butuntumula, Bukalasa, Kamira, Kalagala, Kikyusa, Makulubita , Luwero – Kasana and Zirobwe.
The August 2014 national population census enumerated the population at 458,158, and the Total Number of Muslims as per the 2014 census is 89232 18.6%, Luwero Muslim District is preparing a census to have the exact total number / percentage of Muslims in the District. The census will be carried out by Social services department with the help of Village Imaams at Mosque Levels.
